(Reuters) – The US is “absolutely devastated” for failing to qualify for the men’s Olympic football tournament after losing 2-1 to Honduras on Sunday, coach Jason Kreis said.
A loss in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament means the US will miss a third game in a row, with their final appearance in Beijing.
Juan Carlos Obregon and Luis Palma scored a goal for Honduras, with US captain Jackson Yueill responding for his side.
“Absolutely devastated,” said Kreis after the game. “The boys are in our locker room, it’s like a tragedy.
“I think we all wanted this so badly … and I think you might put yourself in a position where you can’t get to the required level if you want to too badly.
“We weren’t good enough to make it because I think we had enough quality in our team, we had enough skills in our team.
“But just in the end … tonight I didn’t think it was enough.”
Honduras will play Mexico in the final on Tuesday, with both teams advancing from July 23 to August 23. 8 Olympic Games in Tokyo from North and Central America and the Caribbean.
