(Reuters) – Major League Soccer (MLS) have said that Inter Miami’s signing of French midfielder Blaise Matuidi, who won the French World Cup last year, falls outside of roster and budget rules and that the club could face sanctions.
David Beckham’s side recruited Matuidi on a free transfer after leaving Italian champions Juventus in August. The league said last month it would launch a formal review of the deal.
“The league has come to the conclusion that Inter Miami was not up to the roster and budget rules in 2020,” MLS said in a statement at https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/inter-miami-cf-exercise- offseason-buyout -on-matias-pellegrini on Friday.
It was said that Matuidi had been classified as a TAM (Targeted Allocation Money) player, but his salary was above the TAM player limit so he should have been classified as a Designated Player. Teams can have up to three such players.
“As a result, Inter Miami broke the designated player limit as the team had three designated players alongside Matuidi in 2020.”
MLS said it would complete its investigation and announce the result and any sanctions soon. Inter said when the investigation began that they would be fully involved in the process.
Matuidi, 34, won three league titles at Juve after joining them from Paris St-Germain in 2017, where he played more than 200 games and won four league titles. He won the World Cup with France in Russia in 2018.
Inter Miami separately announced that they used their one-time off-season buyout for Argentine midfielder Matias Pellegrini’s MLS deal before the squad compliance deadline.
Pellegrini, previously listed as an Inter Miami Designated Player, joined the club’s USL League One partner Fort Lauderdale on loan and is not eligible to play on the 2021 MLS roster.
The three Inter Miami’s designated players for the 2021 season are Gonzalo Higuain, Matuidi and Rodolfo Pizarro.
“We have worked with Matias, his agents and MLS to reach an agreement and we currently believe that this is the best option for all parties,” Inter Miami Sports Director Chris Henderson said in a statement https: // www. intermiamicf.com/de/post/2021/04/16/inter-miami-cf-exercises-offseason-buyout-mat-pellegrini.
