LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – George Segal, the Oscar-nominated actor who starred with Richard Burton on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, played Glenda Jackson on A Touch of Class and won laughter on the television sitcom The Goldbergs “. died at the age of 87, his wife Sonia said on Tuesday.
“The family is devastated when they announced that George Segal passed away this morning from complications from bypass surgery,” Sonia Segal said in a statement to entertainment stores Variety and Deadline Hollywood.
Segal was charming and funny, excelled in both dramatic and comedic roles, and had a lifelong passion for the banjo. He performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1981 with his group, the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band.
Segal’s acting career began in the early 1960s on the New York stage and on television. He quickly moved to film and played an artist in the star-studded ensemble drama “Ship of Fools” in 1965 and a scheming, cunning American sergeant in a WWII prisoner-of-war camp on King Rat.
Two years later, he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the harrowing marriage drama Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.
