LONDON (Reuters) – UK airline easyJet (LON 🙂 executive director criticized some government plans to resume travel, saying that COVID-19 testing should not be required for passengers traveling to low risk destinations .

UK airlines and the travel industry were disappointed with Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s warning on Monday that it was too early to say when international holidays could resume, meaning the reopening will be later than the current date of the May 17th could be postponed.

EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said Tuesday that the announcement from the previous day was missing many details.

He said the government’s proposed traffic light system to classify low risk countries as green and higher risk countries as red makes sense, but travel to green countries should not require passengers to take two COVID-19 tests.

“It doesn’t make sense to me … because it could add cost and complexity,” he told BBC Radio.

He said the cost of COVID-19 testing sometimes exceeded easyJet’s ticket prices.

“That means you wouldn’t open international travel to everyone, but to those who could afford to pay for it,” he said.

When asked if people could travel to popular destinations like Spain and Greece without restrictions by July and August, Lundgren said, “Yeah, I definitely think so.”

He said easyJet continues to discuss issues related to reopening travel with the government.
