Are you expecting a $ 1,400 stimulus check in the mail? Here’s what to look out for

These new $ 1,400 stimulus checks are arriving.

While the majority of payments are made by direct deposit, others receive the money in the mail – as a check or debit card.

This time around, there may be some differences in what the U.S. Postal Service will put in your mailbox if you receive the money this way.

While the first two stimulus checks included the name of former President Donald Trump, you won’t see President Joe Biden’s signature on this final round.

“We are doing everything in our power to expedite payments, not delay them. Therefore, the president’s name will not appear on the note line for this round of stimulus checks,” said Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, during a briefing last week .

Instead, the checks are signed by a career officer from the Bureau of Fiscal Service who works with the IRS to deliver the money.

According to a tax official, that was the precedent before the previous presidential administration.

“It’s really unusual to have the name of a single president on a check,” said Amy Hanauer, executive director of the Institute for Taxes and Economic Policy, a non-partisan tax policy organization.

“It hasn’t been the case in all of US history, nor was it the way it was done,” she said.

Some people are given a debit card instead. Note that the money is not added to any previously sent cards. Instead, a new card will be issued.

More details on these new cards are expected shortly.

These shipments should be labeled more clearly this time around after some people mistook the first $ 1,200 debit cards for junk mail.

If you’re expecting a debit card or paper check to be sent in the mail, look out for a white envelope, which Hanauer says is clearly labeled.

“People really just have to look for an envelope like this from the IRS and vigilantly check their mail this week and for the next few weeks,” she said.
