TOKYO (Reuters) – About 1,000 Olympic Games volunteers resigned last month, organizers said. During this time, the President of the Organizing Committee, Yoshiro Mori, resigned due to sexist remarks and a new President was elected to replace him.

Volunteers are the backbone of all games. They do everything from guiding people to venues to translating and driving visitors around. A sharp drop in their numbers could add another hurdle to Tokyo 2020, already hit by an unprecedented one year postponement and lack of public support amid concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

Tokyo 2020 organizers said not all of the volunteers who recently resigned have quit based on Mori’s comments. Surveys have shown that volunteers have repeatedly raised concerns about the coronavirus.

The total number of volunteers recruited by Tokyo 2020 is 80,000 and the organizers have stated that they do not expect it to affect the conduct of the Games as the number of games completed is only about 1% of the total.

Another 30,000 volunteers were separately recruited by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, who were unable to immediately comment on how many resigned.

In addition, the rescheduling of the games has affected some volunteers who were able to help last year but not this year due to job changes or other lifestyle changes, e.g. B. taking care of young children.

The Olympic Games will take place from July 23rd to August 8th.
